On 11-14 October 2013 the 6th Trends in Medical Mycology (TIMM) was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. TIMM is the bi-annual joined meeting organized jointly by the European Confederation of Medical Mycology (ECMM) and the Infectious Diseases Group of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC IDG).

TIMM is one of the most important meetings in the field of fungal infections, a forum in which medical mycologists, microbiologists and clinicians from all over the world exchange research results and opinions on medical practice.

Previous TIMM congresses were held in Amsterdam, Berlin, Turin, Athens and Valencia. Copenhagen was the 2013 venue city.

The structure of the scientific programme with plenary sessions, parallel workshops, Meet-the-Expert sessions and poster sessions was well received. And also the sponsored symposia were very well appreciated and attended.

The poster session encouraged one-to-one discussions between faculty, presenters and delegates and was well visited. This year 250 abstracts were accepted for poster presentation.

Lots of younger colleagues (under 35 years) were present during the congress and 6 of them, received the “ECMM Young Investigators Travel Award”, 5 for their excellent posters (Sara Gago (Spain), Raquel Sabino (Portugal), Steffi Rocchi (France), Deborah Lockhart (UK), Sebastian Heimann (Germany)), and 1 for her terrific oral presentation (Katharina Becker, Netherlands).

There were 2 special lectures: the ECMM E. Drouhet Lecture and the EORTC Ben De Pauw Lecture.
Sybren de Hoog from the Netherlands presented the first with the title: “A bird’s eye view of the fungal Kingdom – the quest for nomenclatural stability”
The Ben De Pauw Lecture was presented by Claudio Viscoli from Italy, with the title: “Twenty-five years of clinical mycology: what has been done and what should be done”.

During the Congress many different organisations and societies took the opportunity to hold committee meetings, seminars and working group discussions, including the ECMM Council and the EORTC ID Group Meeting.
