Report Statusworkshop 2011
Within the German Society of Hygiene and Microbiology (DGHM) several working groups (Fachgruppen) have been established The group dedicated to the research on eukaryotic pathogens organises annual meetings (‘Statusworkshop’) providing a platform mainly for PhD students to present their work on either parasites or pathogenic fungi/yeasts. The 2011 meeting was organised by Joachim Ernst at the Heinrich-Heine-University in Düsseldorf. The opening talk was given by Mihai Netea from the Radboud University Nijmegen. Mihai gave a tour d’horizon on „Immunology of Fungal Infections“. This first highlight of the meeting was made possible by the generous support of the European Federation of Medical Mycology /Deutschsprachigen Mykologischen Gesellschaft (DMykG). After a full afternoon session all participants enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of a traditional pub in the Düsseldorf city centre. On Saturday the research prize of the Fachgruppe was the second highlight of the meeting. This years laureate is Jakob Engel from the group of Francoise Routier at the Hannover Medical School, who was elected for his excellent work on the biosynthesis and function of galactofuranose-containing glycoconjugates of the pathogenic mould Aspergillus fumigatus. In his presentation Jakob emphasised the importance of glycobiology for a better understanding of the fundamental cell biology of fungi. The next meeting will be organised in February 2012 at the Robert-Koch-Institute at Berlin.
